How to use a homemade dog ear cleaner
Not all dogs need regular ear cleaning. Those with drooping ears such as cocker spaniels and basset hounds should clean their ears once a week, while pit bulls or German shepherds with ears that keep their ears dry may take longer to clean their ears.
Warm your dog’s earwax to at least room temperature before use. This is especially important when using oil.
Never use cotton swabs or Q-tips on your dog’s ears. Instead, use a cotton ball or simple gauze wrapped around your finger to clean your pet’s ears with a homemade dog ear cleaner.
Simply dip or spray a cotton ball or tube finger in the solution, then gently wipe your dog’s ear. Here’s how to do it.
To clean the dirt and debris that has built up in your dog’s ears, use a floral syringe or spray bottle similar to the one used to apply the hair dye.
Gently squeeze the solution into the dog’s ear, gently massage the base of the ear, let the dog shake its head to naturally remove dirt and wax, then wipe off any remaining residue with gauze or cotton wool.
If possible, put your ears outside and let your dog shake his head if necessary. That way, you don’t have to take the time to remove the walls.
Note: If you are using oil, place the oil container in a glass or bowl filled with hot water to heat it. Test the temperature of the oil or dog litter on the inside of your wrist before using it to make sure it doesn’t overheat. Your wrists should barely feel warm.
