How To Teach Your Dog To Wave Hello And Goodbye

Step 1: Remove The Dog’s Paws From Your Hand.

Take the treat in hand with the dog in front of you and let him sniff it. Place your hand in yours, then place it near the palm of your dog. Your dog should put his paw on your fist to try and grab a treat. Make sure to put your hand right over your dog’s leg.

After the leg is lifted, reward the behavior. Pay attention to which leg he uses. These are the feet you will work on for the first behavior. From now on, reward your dog for using this paw.

Repeat the process until your dog immediately raises his paw every time you place your fist on his leg.

Step 2: Have Your Dog Raise Its Arms Higher.

Repeat step 1, but raise your hands slightly higher after each successful rep. Keep doing this until your dog paws your hand at chest level.

Step 3: Get Your Hand Out Of The Equation.

Place your hands as before, but pull them back before your dog can make contact before he can make contact. Don’t forget to reward them – this time you’re announcing that you rewarded them for just lifting their feet.

Step 4: Add Your Verbal Cues And Manual.

This time, say your greetings before reaching out for your hand, then immediately put out your hand. Your dog should draw air with its paws. Give him another gift.

Once your dog understands verbal cues, move on to manual cues. Make your verbal comment while waving the same hand you used to get him to raise his leg.

If this doesn’t work the first time, try again, but this time, pull your hand up and wave as she raises her leg. Repeat over and over, but gradually reduce the length of time you stretch your arm until all you have to do is wave at your dog.

Step 5: Repeat The Same Steps For The Opposite Leg.

Now that he’s mastered how to get rid of halos, you can now teach him to say goodbye using the same steps as before, but with his feet upside down. Only reward your pet for using the opposite leg.

Some dogs may be able to tell the difference between “hello to wool” and “goodbye to wool.” However, because dogs actually depend on sight, your pet will rely more on the hand you try. Keep practicing each command consistently, making sure you only reward him if he does the trick right.
