Tips for living and training a blind dog

Orbit communication with other dogs is also slightly different. He will not see the social signals of other dogs. And when he tries to give a signal, they can be a little awkward. “He did some things right, but in the wrong way,” Melissa said. For example, he can play with a bow facing away from other dogs, or go up to sniff the dog and crash into its side. The dogs that interact with it must be patient and uninhibited.

Physical security is another big problem. For example, families have guards at the stairs and baby gates to prevent accidents. As she walks on the road, Melissa needs to be aware of things that orbits can find, such as bushes or poles.

Modification training for blind dogs

When using methods such as bait training and prizes (clickers), teaching a blind dog is very similar to working with a visible dog, although you can clearly rely more on verbal cues (or touching both deaf and blind dogs) compared to hand language signals or body.

The new behavior can initially be attracted, captured, or shaped. For example, you can use spice bait to “sit”. You can catch a dog by following a sound like a dog’s name or touch like a shoulder touch. They can be introduced almost as you would imagine with a dog that looks.
Use a gift marker such as a clicker or the word “yes” to tell your dog which behavior is valued now depends on sound rather than sight. For deaf-blind dogs, certain signals, e.g. B. touch of the chest can be used as a gift marker.
You can strengthen your behavior with food, praise, touch, play, or other things that are considered valuable by dogs, just as you do with dogs that are demanding.
The training was quite similar so Orbit participated in my puppy, starting with skills for beginners and advanced and was marked by only a few minor changes in all exercises.

In puppy classes where puppies interact with each other, we ensure that the approach is carried out slowly and carefully (which is actually a good idea for all puppies!). When we teach impulse control behaviors by staying in and out, we immediately find that adding a verbal stick immediately (instead of waiting for the behavior to finish) actually speeds up training because it cannot respond to early body language signals. ,,,,.
