◆ For loyalty and friendship
Positive reinforcement doesn’t mean that you don’t flag your dog’s bad behavior, but “discipline” should be used as a constructive guide rather than a bullying technique. Discipline in the form of time outs, distance, interruptions to talk, or simply ignoring behavior you don’t like is much more effective than suppressing negative behavior excessively. Guiding your dog in making the right choices and understanding what should be happy can help strengthen the bond between you.
There seems to be a big misconception that positive trainers never like to say no to their dogs and let them escape negative behavior. There is also a misconception that positive trainers teach just adding food to a dog’s face and that they lack the skills to rehabilitate serious problem behaviors like aggression.
Positive training helps people maintain relationships even with problem dogs by understanding and reversing problem behaviors without resorting to violence or fear. This changes behavior without compromising the trust between the dog and its owner. Anyone can use gifts to teach dogs to learn, but modern knowledge and skills are needed to reverse negative behavior without resorting to violence.
People who take the time to study their dogs lead full lives with their dogs. A healthy balance between learning manners, promoting socialization, and giving your dog the right business will ensure his dog’s success. People who don’t give their dog the training they need will take it very seriously and will have problems in the future. The learning process doesn’t have to be expensive or intense. The more comfortable it is for both of you, the better the results.
